In this important sloka the words, "sujatyam-amalam" (sujati=high born, and amala=completely pure or flawless) are very significant. According to bona fide Vedic authority only clean top quality gems are considered to be auspicious. To further support this important yet mostly over-looked dictate we quote the following slokas: In the "Garuda Puranam," chap. 68, verse 17 it is stated by Sri Suta Goswami:
"Pure, flawless gems have auspicious
powers which can protect one from demons, snakes, poisons, diseases,sinful reactions, and other dangers, while flawed stones have the opposite affect." Again we quote from the ancient "Agni Puranam" chap. 246, slokas 7 & 8:
"A gem free from all impurities and radiating its characteristic
internal luster should be looked upon as an escort of good luck;
A gem which is cracked, fissured, devoid of luster, or appearing rough or sandy, should not be used at all." This point is also made in many chapters of Sri Garuda Puranam, such as this quote on rubies by Sri Suta Goswami,
"A ruby, although genuine,
should not be worn if it has strong color banding, excessive inclusions
within like numerous internal cracks, a sandy appearance, a rough
surface, or is dull and lusterless. Anyone using such a flawed ruby,
even out of ignorance, will suffer from disease, or loss of fortune."
All these nine gems are considered equally sacred, and they only differ according to the astral influence of their ruling planets. In essence the table of Asian Birth Stones is as follows:
SAPTA-RATNA, the seven jewels talisman, combines the gems which correspond to the 7 planets ruling the seven days of the week. Every day of the week is governed over by a specific planet. In many languages the weekdays days are named directly after the same planet that rules over them. In Hindi (for example) we must simply examine the Sanskrit origin of the names of the days to see the correspondence. Ravivar (Ravi=Sun), Chandravar (Chandra=Moon), and Shanivar (Shani=Saturn), still remain intact in English as SUNday, MOONday, and SATURNday, the others, in order are... Mangalvar (Mangala=Mars) Tuesday. Budhavar (Budha=Mercury) Wednesday, Guruvar (Guru=Jupiter) Thursday, and Shukravar (Shukra=Venus) Friday; The Vedic shadow planets, Rahu & Ketu, do not rule any weekdays, but they can be used on Saturday and Thursday respectively. In practically every other language from French to Thai the weekdays are directly named after the same ruling planet. The Sapta-ratna should be used as 7 different pendants to be worn successively on each corresponding day of the week. This practice is still popular in India, especially among astrologers, royal families, and wealthy people. This 21k (90%) solid yellow gold with natural gems pendant line was designed by Gemologist Richard Shaw Brown (RSB), based on the nine planetary symbols. Each piece is set with a fine, clean, natural, semiprecious gem, viz., red garnet for Sun, moonstone for Moon, red coral for Mars, green diopside for Mercury, heliodor or yellow tourmaline for Jupiter, white zircon for Venus, iolite for Saturn, hessonite for Rahu, and enstitite cat's eye for Ketu
